Rural cooperatives

Rural cooperatives have a chequered history. The essential philosophy of solving a common economic problem by working together remains sound, provided that the special characteristics of a cooperative organisation are appropriate for the situation and the cooperative business activity has the potential to be profitable. There are examples throughout the world of successful rural cooperatives providing marketing or supply services, milk or crop processing or financial services to their members. There are also examples of cooperatives established as part of "development programmes" which have never functioned successfully and others that have been destroyed by political interference or poor management. As with agricultural banks there are now examples of cooperatives or credit unions being revived to once again provide viable services to their members in rural areas. The resources identified here are intended to facilitate that process.
