| The goal of the Cooperative Development Center is to create a centre of excellence concerning key issues and challenges in cooperative development. It brings together substantive studies and analysis to help the practitioner and to advance the field of cooperative development. The Center is not intended as a repository of cooperative development documents, nor to replicate other web sites about cooperatives. Instead it has hyperlinks to cooperative development organizations and other sites where basic cooperative methodologies and information is available, which are considered helpful to practitioners, donors or others interested in cooperative development. The library has an excellent selection of basic texts on cooperative development, good practice information and case studies from around the world. It can be searched by sector and by issue. Sectoral themes include agriculture and natural resources, energy and rural electrification, finance and microfinance, credit unions and community development. There are also links to a wide range of international cooperative development organisations. |

Las primeras cooperativas no fueron que el resultado de los esfuerzos espontáneos de la gente de ayudarse entre ellos mismos. Con el tiempo, sin embargo, el valor de la cooperación y la organización producida fue notado por los gobiernos y sus consultores y se echaron a andar pasos para establecer estándares operacionales. El primer paso fue hacia la elaboración de una ley cooperativa. Tales normas se encuentran, hoy en día, cuidadosamente enmendadas y revisadas con el pasar de los años, en la amplia mayoría de países de todo el mundo. Bajo estas leyes las cooperativas se convierten en entidades jurídicas y pueden poseer propiedades, comercio, prestar y acceder a créditos.
