| This manual is one of a series published by PACT that was developed in Nepal by the Women's Empowerment Programme. This programme was based on developing the capacity of women's groups, through literacy training, to manage their own village banks or savings groups and improve their income-generating activities. The programme was implemented through local NGOs and did not involve any provision of external money for credit. The manuals used during the programme have now been translated into English and published by PACT Publications so that the method can be adopted by others. All the manuals include literacy exercises and use stories or dialogues to explain each topic covered, and they show how pictures and questions can be used to stimulate discussions. ”Forming our village bank” is designed as a self-teaching manual, so that it can be used by groups of women in their weekly meetings to improve their savings group operations. Topics covered include: - What is a village bank?
- The importance of rules
- Electing our officers
- How to be money smart – keeping track of our money
- Qualities of members
- Savings
- The management committee
- Banking day
- Safe money handling
- Checking the health of our village bank
At the back there are sample forms for savings passbooks, financial statements, balance sheets, cash control sheets, summary transaction sheets, savings journal, cash book, attendance and payment records and some sample village bank rules. |
