| Description | This manual is aimed at credit committees, loan officers and analysts involved in assessing credit applications made by their clients. The manual has been written as a training tool to provide a fully comprehensive coverage of all the aspects of credit analysis. Indeed, the manual suggests that different institutions will place different emphasis on each of the numerous sub-topics covered. The manual is broken down into six main units: - The First Unit, consisting of the Theoretical Framework, describes in detail the basic elements needed to conduct an adequate credit analysis;
- The Second Unit describes the different modes of financing offered by credit programs, and models the application for working capital and fixed assets credits;
- The Third Unit describes what an investment plan is and what characteristics it should have in order to be useful to the loan officer in his or her duties;
- The Fourth Unit describes and enumerates the principal criteria (financial and others) that the loan officer should consider to determine not only the approval of a credit but also the terms under which it will be granted. The section on financial criteria places special emphasis on the importance of financial projections as a basis for defining the terms and characteristics of a credit;
- The Fifth Unit describes the functions and objections of a credit committee and lists the steps the loan officer should follow in placing an application before the committee; and
- The Sixth Unit is composed of a list of illustrative cases concerning the various circumstances that can arise in processing a loan. The section uses descriptions of fictional clients and their businesses to illustrate a range of decision-making options that the loan officer faces daily in the process of credit analysis. The cases are hypothetical situations rather than numerical problems.
Each topic and sub-topic in this manual is accompanied by a practical example and a questionnaire - this includes sample documents and role plays of different scenarios. The aim is to identify and highlight the most important concepts as well as to provide feedback on the level of understanding gained by the reader throughout.
